Record No 778 Duplex Rabbet & Filletster Plane
Record No. 778 Duplex Rabbet & Filletster Plane

The Record No. 778 was introduced into the Record line in 1959 as a result of C & J Hampton's acquisition of Woden Tools (The Steel Nut & Joseph Hampton Ltd.), and is a direct descendant of the Woden W78.

Woden Tools had made a limited range of woodworking planes, and other tools, from their factory located at Wednesbury in Staffordshire. Prior to that Woden Tools had themselves acquired their plane lineup from a Birmingham manufacturer, W.S. Tools. Among those was the W78, based on the No. 078 Duplex Rabbet Plane, but differing insofar as the W78 featured two fence arms, instead of the one arm offered in the 078, and a front knob. It should be noted, however, that the knob did not transfer across to the Record No. 778.

As stated earlier, the No. 778 plane has two positions for the cutter -- one for ordinary work, and the other for bull-nose work.

It is fitted with a hardened steel spur, an adjustable depth gauge which is removable, and an adjustable fence which can be used on either side of the plane.

This plane is adaptable for many other purposes besides rabbeting when the fence and arms are removed.

The cutter, when used in the rear position, is adjusted endwise by a screw adjustment.

The base and sides are ground and polished, and the fittings nickel-plated.

First introduced in a Price List in January 1959.

Please note that the average prices for Record planes have been determined by keeping track of planes sold on eBay, internet auctions, actual real-world auctions, through dealers and various dealer websites. They should only be used as a guide and it should be noted that all prices are dependent on the age, condition, completeness and rarity of a particular plane, as well as the presence, if any, of packaging and associated items, such as brochures, advertising or instructions.
