Record No. CS88 Calvert Stevens Plane
Created to fill the gap between a Stanley-type plane and those made by Norris of London, the Record CS88 boasted superior workmanship to any other Record plane that was currently in production at the time.
Developed by production engineer Martin Calvert and plane production manager Mel Stevens, the CS88 (often referred to as the Calvert-Stevens) boasted such innovations as a superior frog seating, which was accurately machined to very fine tolerances, a much heavier body casting than other models in the Record line up, and a Norris-style adjuster for the depth of cut and lateral movement. The plane also features a Japanese made thick laminated steel cutter, which was fitted with a Stay-Set cap iron, along with a a gunmetal lever cap with a large knurled screw.
The handle and knob were of select Indian rosewood and each plane was individually marked with a production number on the body casting under the rear handle.
Rather than the normal "Record Blue" enamel finish, the body and frog were enameled in dark green.
The CS88 had the shortest production period of any Record Plane. It was first introduced in the 1988 catalogue and last listed in the October 1990 one.
The Record CS88 was supplied in a baize-lined stained wooden box.
